What is ECU Remapping?
Most modern vehicles contain an Engine Control Unit, commonly referred to as an ECU is a small computer inside your vehicle which controls how the engine works. Before sending the vehicles out manufacturers de-tune the engine by setting the software on the ECU to default. The reason that manufactures do this is because the default settings on the ECU must take into account the different climate, laws and restrictions as well as the different fuel quality around the world. ECU remapping is the modification / replacement of the default software available on the vehicles ECU.
How does it work?
An ECU Remap will replace the default software available on the ECU and overwrite it with new software that will be refined to optimize the cars overall performance. The ECU is essentially a program that controls how your engine works. When your vehicle is remapped the tuned software is plugged into either your cars serial / OBD port – this in turn overwrites the default engine map with the upgraded one to improve your vehicles engine performance.
Why choose ECU remapping?
There are many reasons that our customers choose to remap their vehicle. The first is that you will notice that your engine responds better when the accelerator is pressed down. The overall torque and power will be remarkably increased. During normal driving you will notice that your MPG is better which will decrease the cost of fuel. Power delivery will be smoother making for a much safer driving experience, making it easier and safer to overtake. Throttle response will be improved and the rev range will be enhanced.
What are the effects of ECU remapping?
Although some people say that ECU remap won’t affect your fuel usage this isn’t actually true. Because you are upgrading the performance of your engine more fuel is going to be consumed by it in order to produce the increase in power. If you drive around in a passionate way after the remap has been completed then the fuel economy will not increase and may even decrease. However if the driver modifies their driving style to make the most of the increased power and torque throughout the rev range then a better fuel economy can be reached. A good example of this is that the improvement in torque produced by the engine after remapping means the driver no longer has to drop down a gear to maintain speed on a hill or may not have to change gear as frequently in traffic. All of these little things will add up to an improvement in fuel economy.
Are ECU remaps legal?
Yes – Although you should notify your insurance company after the work is complete.
